BONE: AN INTRODUCTION To THE PHYSIOLOGY OF SKELETAL TISSUE. By Franklin C. McLean and Marshall R. Urist. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1961. xvii, 261 pp. $6.00. The book is one of the series of The Scientists Library: Biology and Medicine. The purpose of the series is to provide authoritative information about the growth and status of various subjects in such a fashion that the individual books may be read with profit not only by the specialist but also by those whose interests lie in other fields. The book is not intended as a full-scale monograph on the physiology of bone. Historical treatment is reduced to a minimum, documentation is limited, illustrations are few. On the other hand, the text provides an extended treatment of the current state of the literature. The authors are well qualified because both have made notable contributions to the knowledge of bone. In addition, they collaborated in a number of studies. The content of the book is concerned with bone as a tissue rather than with its mechanical function in providing the skeletal support of the body or with the shape, adaptation, or development of individual bones. The intent of the authors is to bridge the gaps remaining between the various disciplines and to contribute to the unification of the subject. Nearly every approach to the study of bone is contained in the book including morphology, experimental embryology, histochemistry, enzyme chemistry, crystallography, endocrinology, electron microscopy, autoradiography, and microradiography. Complementing the many clinical treatises on bone, the book considers disorders of metabolism from the standpoint of pathological physiology rather than diagnosis and treatment. Reflecting the progress in the study of bone, this second edition represents an extensive revision entailing a considerable amount of complete rewriting and expansion of most of the text. However, the book still remains a concise statement of the present status and important advances in its field. E. S. CRELIN

An investigation on body weights, blood glucose levels and pituitary-gonadal axis hormones in diabetic and metformin-treated diabetic female rats
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder which affects whole body systems including reproductive system. Diabetes is also a contributing factor to infertility. Metformin is one of the most common drugs to control hyperglycemia. In this study, 36 adult Sprague-Dawley female rats (170-210 g) were divided into 3 groups (control, diabetic and diabetic-treated by metformin). In second and third groups, diab...
متن کاملEffects of caffeine consumption before resistance exercise on blood levels of testosterone and growth hormones in male athletes
Introduction: Caffeine has the athletic performance-enhancing effects, but its effect on concentrations of anabolic hormones is unclear. Therefore, this research examines the short–term effect of caffeine consumption on anabolic hormones of growth (GH) and testosterone (TS) after performing resistance exercise (RE). Materials and Methods: In this randomized double-blind, and placebo-controlled ...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Thyroid Hormones, Vitamin D and Fasting Blood Glucose Level During Summer and Winter in Nondiabetic Adults
Background and Aims: 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 is recognized to be an essential element for healthy body; however, its deficiency has been identified as a risk factor for thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus and other autoimmune diseases and infectious diseases. Thyroid disease is common in the general population that its prevalence increases proportional to age. Subjects with poorly controlled diabe...
متن کاملThe changes in stress indices and some steroid hormones of Cyprinus carpio broodstocks in different stages of artificial reproduction
Blood is directly involved in many metabolic processes, and blood and hormonal assessments can be helpful in diagnosing the physiological status of fish. In this study, changes in stress indices (glucose and cortisol) and steroid hormones (testosterone, estradiol and progesterone) of sea carp broodstocks in three stages, before hormone injection, after injection and after artificial reproducti...
متن کاملDetermining the best dose of Ovulin hormone injection in artificial reproduction of Cyprinus carpio by examining some blood factors and steroid hormones
This study was performed to evaluate the best dose of Ovulin hormone in artificial reproduction of female sea carp broodstocks in the spring of 2021 in the bone reproduction and breeding center of Sijual in Bandar-e-Turkmen, Golestan province. 12 adult female sea carp with an average weight of 1750.46 ± 312.58 g were injected at doses of 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7 ml / kg body weight of Ovulin hormo...
متن کاملEvaluation of Thyroid Hormones, Blood Gases, Body Antioxidant Status, the Activity of Blood Enzymes and Bone Characteristics in Broiler Chickens with Cold Induced Ascites
A total of 150 day old female chickens (Ross 308) were randomly allocated to 2 groups with 5 replicate and 15 chicks in each replicate to determine the effects of cold induced ascites on performance, antioxidant status, blood enzyme activities and bone metabolism. The two experimental treatments were: 1) chicks that reared under normal temperature (NT) and 2) chicks that reared under cold tempe...
